Abstract

The study was conducted on 80 adult diagnosed cases having type 2 diabetes attended Elpharaana Health Insurance clinic which covered Middle district where about 200 patients were registered in the clinic.
The results summary:
 Nearly two thirds of the sample were females were females (62.5%) where only one third of the sample were males (37.5%).
 Patients aged from 50 to less than 60 years old (30%), patients aged from 40 to less than 50 years old (25%), followed by those aged from 30 to less than 40 years old (22.5%), while equal percent of the patients aged from 20 to less than 30 years old and from 60 to less than 70 years old (11.2%).
 Nearly half of the patients were highly educated (university education) (42.4%), followed by high school education including general ,technical and commercial high school(35%), followed by basic education(18.8%) and the minority were illiterate(3.8%).
 The majority of cases were working (85%) and only 15% were not working or retired.
 As regard smoking about three fourth of the patients were non- Smokers (77.5%) while those who were smokers were only (22.5%).
 Weight ranged between 60kg-140kg with mean value 92.2±20.5. Height ranged between 154cm-189cm with mean value 166.8±7.2. Body mass index ranged between 21-46 (kg/m2) with mean value 32.8±6.2. Waist circumference ranged between 73cm-145cm with mean value 101.1±19.3. Hip circumference ranged between 90cm-156cm with mean value 121.2±13.5 and waist/hip ratio ranged between 0.65-1.16 with mean value 0.8±0.1.
 Fasting blood glucose level ranged between 100-400mg/dl with mean value 146.5±48.3.
 Triglycerides tests ranged between 120-170 with mean value 143.5±11.9.
 Total cholesterol level ranged between 105-245 with mean value 187.6±27.4.
 Knowledge sample (type 2 diabetic patients ) score ranged between 28.6 – 92.9 with mean value 75.8±14.0. Poor knowledge (3.8%), fair knowledge (28.8%) and good knowledge (67.5%).
 Practice score among the studied type 2 diabetic adult patients found that, more than 50% of cases didn’t practice regular exercise. Concerning their habits, the majority of cases used to test their blood sugar level(96.3%), and were used to eat light meals between main meals(96.3%).most of cases eat fruits and vegetables (83.8%), more than one third of cases prefer to use medication instead of herbs(37.5%) most of cases visit the clinic regularly for follow-up(80%). Practice score ranged between 30.0–90.0 with mean value 58.5±15.5. Poor practice score (27.5%), fair practice score (55.0%) and good practice scores (17.5%).
 Reasons for not visiting a nutritionist among the studied type 2 diabetic adult patients showed that, the highest number was 56 (70.9%) who haven’t been referred while the lowest number was 1 (1.3%) who had a financial burden.
 There was positive significant difference between knowledge and practice score of the studied type 2 diabetic adult patients.
 There was significant difference between gender, age and knowledge score, while there was no significant difference between gender, age and practice score.
 There was significant difference between educational level, knowledge score and practice score. There was no significant difference between occupation, knowledge score and practice score.
 There was significant difference between smoking and knowledge score, while there was no significant difference between smoking and practice score.
 There was significant difference between body mass index and practice score.
 There was significant difference between waist circumference and knowledge score. While there was no significant difference between other items, knowledge and practice score.
