The importance of urban spaces in the Old Sana’a City is mainly due to being a featured element in the formation of the heritage urban texture of the city. The have embraced different human dimensions that were essential in forming urban spaces, their function, and the type of human activities within them over centuries. Hence, such spaces need to be maintained in light of the rapid changes of all aspects of life; changes that also influenced these spaces threatening to make them lose their functional role in the structure of the city.
The problem discussed here is that plaza spaces in Old Sana’a lack vitality within the urban texture of the city. This is because the original human role, previously tangible, disappeared.
The research is concerned with studing and analyzing the human dimensions in Old Sana’a City, which made a direct contribution to forming plaza spaces, as well as the changes that negatively influenced their performance and, consequently, the deterioration of the heritage environment - aiming at coming out with a proposal for retrieving the human role within spaces to keep their invaluable material entity.
To achieve the aim of the research, the skeleton of the study consists of four main chapters:
Chapter One: The Urban space as a material and human element in heritage areas:
This chapter is concerned with identifying the urban space, its role in heritage areas, and importance that gives it a top priority in world and domestic preservation processes. Then, the human role was addressed with both its sections: the intellectual (human, cultural, social, economic, and political dimensions of influence on heritage urban spaces) and the behavioral side (different aspects of human activities related to traditional values of the society). Hence, the general factors influencing human activities in urban spaces were addressed; and how the change of activity nature influences the urban space in heritage areas.
Chapter Two: The human role in urban spaces of the Old Sana’a City:
This chapter is concerned with studying the types of urban spaces in the Old Sana’a City as well as their main characteristics. The research addressed the status of urban space prior to the 1962 revolution, and during the change that followed that revolution> Finally, an analytical conclusion - of the human role in urban space of the Old Sana’a City, before and after the change - was made in an attempt to identify the major problems within spaces which resulted from changing the human role inside them.
Chapter Three: World & Arab trials of activating the human role in the heritage urban space:
This chapter focuses on the study and analysis of several world and Arab pioneering trials of preservation, as well as activating the human role within urban spaces located inside heritage areas. The aim was to come out with a complete understanding of the methods for activating the human role, in heritage urban spaces, used in these countries - as well as drawing the main ideas that contributed to the success of preservation and activation processes; ideas that can be used in activating the human role in urban spaces of the application study area of this research.
Chapter Four: A proposal for activating the human role in the urban spaces of the Old Sana’a City:
This chapter includes a proposal that was formulated for activating the human role in the urban spaces of the Old Sana’a City. The proposal went through various stages. On top of these stages in the analytical study of the inner and outer environment influencing urban spaces in the Old Sana’a City. This study was used to set solutions for aiding in retrieving the human role inside spaces. These solutions were shaped as a detailed strategy, with an explanation of their execution mechanism - and the prerequisites, obstacles, and the guaranties of successful implementation of the strategy.
The study concludes by displaying certain results. The most important result is that urban spaces in the Old Sana’a City continuedeterioration due to the absence of an active human role that helps develop and revive heritage spaces in the city. This is attributed to the change of human dimensions and the halt of several influencing human activities within the spaces of the Old City. The study recommends adopting the activation strategy reached, in order to revive and develop heritage space in Sana’a - as well as preserving the whole old city.
