Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate The effectiveness of Cupping Therapy as a complementary therapy on the pulmonary functions and quality of life of asthmatic children.
Patients of the study were 60 children diagnosed as mild persistent asthma according to Global strategy for asthma management and prevention (GINA 2006) Divided into two groups, Thirty children with mild persistent asthma (8 Female and 22 Male) in age group from 8 to 15 years with mean age of 10.73 ± 2.149 enrolled in this study as a Combined treatment group (Cupping therapy + drug treatment). And matched age and sex of thirty children with mild persistent asthma (7 Female and 23 Male) from 8 to 15 years with mean age of 10.6 ± 1.993 as a control group (drug treatment only) for comparative purpose.
Both groups were matched as regarding age, sex, Height and Weight. The age of the children in both groups were in range from 8 to 15 years. More than 70% of the children in both groups were males (73.3% in study group and 76.7% in control group). The mean of height per age in both groups were (28.01 in study group and 28.46 in control group.). The mean of weight per age of the both groups were (28.76 in the study group and 29.06 in control group).
Pulmonary functions (FEV1, FVC, FEV1/FVC Ratio, FEF 25%-75%) were measured before and after the treatment for both groups. The differences between before and after treatment were measured and compared. All pulmonary functions tests differences (FEV1, FVC, FEV1/FVC and FEF 25%- 75%) were found to be significantly higher in treatment study group compared to control group (p-value < 0.05).
Pediatric Quality of Life Questitionaire was measured before and after the treatment and the difference was compared. PQLQ was found to be significantly higher in Treatment Study group compared to control group (p-value < 0.05).
Clincal evaluation (Cough, Wheezes, Noctornal symptoms, Use of risk medication) are evaluated and compared before and after treatment. Significant and clinical improvement of the study group regarding all symptoms of asthma exceeded the improvement of the control group except for use of risk medication because the number of children who used the risk medications before the study was small.
Conclusion:
1-Cupping Therapy is an effective complementary treatment in asthmatic children.
2- Cupping had a significant effect on the pulmonary functions of asthmatic children.
3-Cupping therapy had a significant improvement effect and positive impact on the quality of life of asthmatic children.
