Abstract

The Aim of the Work To evaluate thyroid function in simple obese children and adolescents, and to correlate this
function to different clinical and labaratory parameters.
This study included two groups:
Group Ι: included 40 patients who were obese. Obesity was defined according to the body
mass index (BMI) 95th percentile for age and sex using the definition of the International Task Force
for obesity in Childhood .
Group Π: included 40 patients age and sex matched as a control group.
The studied groups were subjected to:
1- Thorough history taking.
2- Clinical examination and anthropometric measurements.
3-Laboratory investigations including
-Fasting blood sugar.
- Some lipid Profile (Total cholesterol and TG).
-Thyroid Function Tests (TSH , free T3 , free T4 and antithyroglobulin anti-bodies
Tg-Ab).
We found that ( 35%) of obese children had increased serum level of TSH and there is
asignificant differences between obese group and normal controls as regard TSH .
In the present study (40%) of obese children had high free T3, Also we found significant
difference between cases and controls as regards free T3
None of our patients (0%) or controls (0%) had higher than normal free T4, Also we found
no significant difference between cases and controls as regards free T4.
None of our patients (0%) showed anti TG titre positivity. thyroid autoimmunity is not
prevalent in obese children .
In the present study there was a significant increase of triglycerides and cholesterol in obese
children, Also we found significant correlations of TSH with triglycerides and cholesterol.
We found a significant positive correlation between TSH and BMI, and there was
insignificant correlation of fT3 with BMI.
In conclusion: Some obese children show thyroid function tests abnormality in the form of
increased TSH and fT3 but no change in fT4 level as a whole we found significant difference
between our study obese children population and controls as regards (TSH and fT3).None of obese
children show anti TG positivity values than normal children so thyroid autoimmunity does not play
a significant role in thyroid changes noted in some obese children.
