Abstract

A total number of 55 cattl e agi ng from 2 to 7 years and of both sexes were used in this study. where 45 of which showed symptoms of indigestion while the rest of the animal were clinically healthy and parasitic f r e e and served as con t r 0 I . It was found that ruminal acidosis, ruminal alkalosis, ruminal tympany and traumatic gastritis were the most commen causes of indigestion in cattle at Sharkia Governorate. The percentage of rumina I aciosis, ruminal alkalosis, ruminal tympany and traumatic gastritis 29.9%, 25.8%, 29.33% and 23.3% at years 1984 respectively. The percentage of previously parameters at year 1985 were 32.8% 27.9% 31.05% and 8.2%. While the percentage at year 1986 were 27.2%, 32.08%, 24.16% and
16.5% respectively. The typical signs appeared were cessation of both
rumination and ruminal movements and anorexia in all cases of indigestion. By palpation on upper left flanke felt that doughy material in rumen and sometimes slight
gasses occure in ruminal acidosis, alkalosis while in tympany there was over di stension of the rumen wi th gases but in trumatic gastritis on palpation atypical
cap of gas can be fel t. The temperature elevated initially, pulse and respiration rates were accelerated in both ruminal acidosis and ruminal tympany, while in
ruminal alkalosis the temperature was within normal range or slightly elevated, the pulse and respiratory rate were within normal range or slightly decreased,
but in traumatic gastritis the temperature was elevated the respiration and pulse rate were slightly increased. Diarrhoea was occur in the ruminal acidosis and ruminal
alkalosis whi l e in ruminal tympany was characterized by soft faeces and expelled in a stream, but constipate ion was noteced i n t rum at i ega s t r i tis inc a t tl e. The
mi I k production was decreased in ruminal acidosis, ruminal alkalosis and ruminal tympany while the traumatic gastritis was characterized by sharp decrease in
milke yield. dehydration . appears in ruminal acidosis than other causes of indigestion in cattle. Blood analysis and biochemical conducted on indigestion in cattle
treatment as well as on control. determination were before and after Haematological study on the blood samples involved determination of haemoglobin, packed cell volume and leucocytic counts. The results revealed that: There was a significant increase in the levels of haemoglobin and packed cell volume in cases of indig- estion due to ruminal acidosis and ruminal alkalosis while in cattle affected with traumatic gastritis the levels of haemoglobin, packed cell volume show significant decrease. On the other hand insignificant change was observed in ruminal tympany. Also results showed , that non signi ficant change in total leucocytic count in cattle affected with indigestion due to ruminal acidosis, ruminal alkalosis and ruminal tympany while in cases of indigestion due to traumatic gastritis showed significant increase than normal. Blood gas tension and acid base balance involved determination of Pc02, Po2, HC03, B.E. and pH in clinically
healthy cattle and those suffered from indigestion.
