Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study addresses the issue of translating humor in As You Like It, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Much Ado About Nothing from English into Arabic. It makes use of linguistic tools in the analysis of humor in both the English and Arabic versions of the selected plays. Therefore, it calls for greater attention from researchers into the nature of humor translation as an interdisciplinary area that should be of interest to translation and humor studies. It sheds light on the most important problems in the translation of humor like: sexual references, horn jokes, puns, malapropism, euphuism, rhetorical devices, irony, and humorous imageries.
This dissertation deals with thorny issues in translation of humor as it tackles many questions like: Are the jokes or other types of humor unrestricted or restricted? Is the humor overtly or covertly stated in the text? Is the humor elaborate or spontaneous? How do the translators deal with the problems of meaning? How do the translators deal with metalinguistic humor? Is humor produced by verbal or non-verbal means or by various combinations of the two?
Finally, this study offers a modest attempt at improving the translation process in particular with regard to English-Arabic translation.
