Abstract

Otitis media with effusion (OME) is the chronic accumulation of mucus within the middle ear OME is a major cause of morbidity which affects nearly every child once at least and is the most common reason for referral for surgery in children in the UK OME is amultifactorial disease and its pathogenesis has been discussed for many years. The causes, such as eustachian tube dysfunction, insufficient pneumatization of the mastoid, craniofacial abnormalities, infections, immunodeficiency, allergic agents and inflammatory mediators are still controversial The high prevalence of OME, difficulties in diagnosis and assessing duration, increased risk of conductive hearing loss, potential impact on language and cognition, and significant practice variations in management, make OME an important condition for the use of up-to-date evidence-based practice guidelines. Treatment options for OME are multiple Management decisions in children with OME depend on effusion duration and laterality, the nature and severity of associated symptoms Clinicians should actually select a treatment based on their professional knowledge and experience, along with the preference and values of the patient and parents/caregivers.
