Introduction
People deprived of parental care, while being kept at residential institutions, are the most social group in need of psychological security. In fact, they are victims of forcible conditions out of the absence of their families’ care and guidance, thereby facing rough psychological, social and economic challenges. These challenges in turn may cause them feel psychologically insecure. Therefore, they are badly in need of psychological security. Actually, people deprived of parental care who are kept at residential institutions, are mostly susceptible to character disorders due to the society’s negative viewpoint of them, thereby causing them feel degraded, diffident and more sensitive to be introvert and aggressive. Thus, enhancing their psychological security is a first step towards achieving their psychological well-being and adaptation to their social environment at the residential institutions.
Problem of the Study
The problem of the study can be pinpointed through this main question: what is the effectiveness of a counseling program in enhancing the schoolgirls’ psychological security at residential institutions? This main question branches out into the following secondary ones:
1. Are there statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the individuals of the experimental groups during the pre and post measures of psychological security?
2. Are there statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the individuals of the experimental groups during the post and consecutive measures of psychological security?
Aims of the Study:
The study aims to research the effectiveness of a counseling program in enhancing the psychological security of the residential institutions schoolgirls.
The Significance of the Study:
The importance of this study is highlighted as follows:
1. Theoretically: the study may help to:
a. enrich the research literature in the realm of mental health and counseling psychology through its wide-angled look at a prominent aspect of mental health – psychological security;
b. provide the Arabic library with a study aiming at developing a counseling program for enhancing the psychological security of residential institutions schoolgirls;
c. go in line with the new psychological attitudes that are highly interested in positive psychology. Therefore, the study tackles a positive side, namely the psychological security;
d. set the scene for further studies in such a province; and
e. come about with recommendations for further study and investigation.
2. Practically, the study may help to:
a. make sure of the practical effectiveness of the suggested counseling program in enhancing the schoolgirls’ psychological security at residential institutions, and its applicability there;
b. use the study results by officials at the ministry of social affairs and mass media when needed as guidelines and in counseling programs designed for the schoolgirls at residential institutions and the other marginalized social groups who lack psychological security; and
c. use this program in further research and practical purposes, once approved as useful and applicable.
Sample of the Study:
The study sample consists of seven schoolgirls at residential institutions, aged from 12 to 16 years, with an average age of 14.29 years, and a standard deviation of 1.28.
Methodology of the Study:
Hence the number of the study sample is small; the researcher has used a one-group experimental method in order to prove the effectiveness of the counseling program in enhancing the psychological security of the schoolgirls at the residential institutions.
Limits of the Study:
Spatial Limits: all the training program sessions were conducted at the library of the residential institution located in Beni Suef.
Temporal Limits: the researcher applied the counseling program over a span of a month and a half, starting from November 15th to February 1st. Three 60-minute sessions were conducted weekly. The researcher embarked upon her program by a breaking–the-ice session, followed by the formative stage through sessions on positive relation with self (eight sessions: from the 2nd to the 9th); and sessions on positive relation with others (eight sessions: from the 10th to the 17th); the positive view of the future (five sessions: from the 19th to the 22nd); internal peace (seven sessions: from the 23rd to the 29th), culminating with a summative session followed by a month and a half follow-up.
Human Limits: the counseling program sessions were conducted for seven schoolgirls of residential institutions, ranging from (12 to 16) years, with an average age of (14.29) years, and a standard deviation of (1.28).
Tools of the Study:
The tools to come were used by the researcher:
a. Measure of Psychological Security (designed by the researcher);
b. The counseling program (designed by the researcher).
Hypotheses of the Study:
• There are statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the individuals of the experimental groups during the pre and post measures of psychological security, in favor of the post measure.
• There are no statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the individuals of the experimental groups during the post and consecutive measures of psychological security.
Statistical Methods:
Relevant non-parametric statistics were used to test the validity of the study hypotheses, such as:
• Wilcoxon Test
(All statistical processes were done by the statistical program SPSS)
The Results of the Study:
• There are statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the individuals of the experimental groups during the pre and post measures of psychological security, in favor of the post measure.
• There are no statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the individuals of the experimental groups during the post and consecutive measures of psychological security.
