Abstract

This is a randomized clinical trial study at Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Ain Shams University Cairo, Egypt. from June 2011 to January 2012 to evaluate the effectiveness of recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEpo) combined with intravenous iron versus intravenous iron therapy only in the treatment of iron deficiency anemia during pregnancy.
We recruited 50 pregnant and anemic women for the study after exclusion of women with any of exclusion criteria, 25 pregnant women in the group I (i.v. iron therapy+ erythropoietin) and 25 pregnant and anemic women in the group II (i.v. iron therapy only).
٭Group (I) allocated to combination therapy with 25.000 International unit erythropoietin (rhEpo) injected subcutaneously (Epoform 10.000unit/ampoule) 2 1/2 Ampoule and 250 mg iron sucrose (Haemojet 100 mg iron / 2 ml ampoule) 2 1/2 ampoule diluted in 500ml saline slowly intravenously.
٭Group (II) allocated to 250 mg iron sucrose (haemojet), 2 1/2 ampoule diluted in 500 mL saline slowly intravenously only over 30 minutes.
٭After 3 days the above therapy repeated.
In the current study, there was high statistically significance difference in the group (I) in all blood picture measurements e.g. (Heamoglobin , Heamatocrite ,…) before and after treatment with erythropoietin plus iron.
And there was high statistically significance difference in the group (II) in all blood picture measurements before and after treatment with iron only.
In the current study, there was no statistically significance difference between both groups as regarding (Hemoglobin concentration, Hematocrit value,…) after treatment and erythropoietin failed to induce significant increase in their blood picture indices.
