المستخلص

Human had passed a series of technological revolutions which changed their history and lifestyle. These changes happened several times through ages. The first change was with the discovery for agriculture, and moving from a nomadic life to stability. Then the industrial revolution had occurred then machinery and electricity was introduced in all life activities. Finally, the computer appeared in the mid-twentieth century to change the world. Architecture - as one of life areas - was affected by all these variables. Thesis aims to study impact of technological revolutions on architectural design, especially information technology impact on the design process. Computers usage in the design process nowadays is surrounded by many questions about its real role in the design process. Is it just a tool to help the designer? Or its role extends to participate designer effectively in the thought processes? Especially since the designs which currently deployed in the architectural community, whether in books, periodicals or on the internet is significantly different from the usual and traditional designs in prior periods, and the question here is “what is computer real role at emergence of these designs on these forms?‖ In this context, the thesis consists of three chapters divided into a series of sections. The first chapter titled: Technology and design process (Theoretical View) and consists of two sections. Second chapter titled: Digitization of thought and performance in design process in information technology age and consists of three sections. Third chapter titled: The digital gap in the thought and performance between Egyptian and foreign projects and consists of two sections. Chapter I: Technology and Design Process (Theoretical View) Section 1: Technology and Architecture from Industrial Revolution to Information Revolution: This section talks about the relationship between technological eras and the architecture which deployed in them, from pre-industrial revolution era to information revolution. This section ends by ”The direct technological impact on the design process that appears obviously in information technology era”. The Structure and Stages of The Design Process: This section talks about the design process as an independent science which appeared at the beginning of the twentieth century. This section also talks about the factors influence on the design process, the design process maps and its stages. This section ends by “The design process is two-dimensional process; the first dimension is a thought dimension and includes operations which translate the design problems to design solutions. The second dimension is a productive dimension that aims to produce outputs in a form of text, 2D drawings, 3D drawings and animation movies”. Chapter II: Digitization of Thought and Performance in Design Process in Information Technology Age Section 3: Digital Form Generation Approaches in The Though Dimension of The Design Process: This section analyzes information technology impact on the thought dimension of the design process. This section ends by “There are three approaches to generate architectural forms in digital way. First approach is a geometrical approach. In this approach computer drafts what in the designer’s mind. Second approach is a mathematical approach. In this approach computer generates solutions based on the design problem which translated by the designer in algorithmic form. The third approach is a genetic approach. This approach depends on computers ability to simulate biological processes in organisms, in order to reach the ideal situation to adapt the solution with the problem, and this is the most complex and modern approach‖. Section 4: Supporting Digital Architectural Trends for Digital Form Generation Approaches: This section describes the final product of previous digital form generation approaches. This section ends by “there are six digital architectural trends which characterized by specific properties”. Section 5: Digital Performance as a Developer of The Productive Dimension in The Design Process: This section presents the digital tools that used in the design process, especially drafting activates. This section ends by “The development peak of drafting tools called building information modeling (BIM). Through BIM the designer can build a virtual Thesis Summary model for his design. This model consists of all architectural elements and components which helps him to improve his performance and productivity in the design process”. Chapter III :The Digital Gap in The Thought and Performance between Egyptian and Foreign Projects Section 6: Analysis of The Digital Gap between Egyptian and Foreign Projects: As a result of Sections three, four and five, two analytical models are concluded; the first model aims to analyze the though dimension and the second model aims to analyze productive dimension. The two models are applied on a group of Egyptian and foreign projects in order to find the difference in information technology usage in the both of design process dimensions. Section 7: Conclusions and Recommendations: This section summarizes final results of the thesis. There is a large digital gap between Egyptian and foreign projects in thought dimension, but in the productive dimension the digital gap is less than thought dimension’s gap. At least the thesis recommends trying to develop architectural design courses and theories of architecture courses in Egyptian universities to keep pace the great development in architectural design methods around the world.
