Abstract

This study aimed at enhancing students’ translation subskills and attitude towards translation. It adopted the quasi-experimental design in terms of using an experimental group and a control one. The experimental group was taught translation through a suggested translation model while the control group was taught translation through the traditional method, during the 10-week treatment period. Subjects in the present study were first year secondary stage male students. The study used four instruments: a translation test to measure translation skills, an analytic translation scoring rubric to assess the translated text, a translation attitude scale to measure students’ attitudes towards translation and a translation portfolio rubric to assess students’ translation portfolios. The proposed translation model is based on translation as a process and a product. The model consists of six stages: reading, analysis, translating/transfer, editing, revising and assessment. Results indicated that the experimental group outperformed the control group in terms of translation skills. The experimental group’s attitude towards translation was more positive than that of the control group. There is a positive correlation between translation skills improvement and portfolio keeping. It was concluded that the suggested translation model combining process and product is effective in developing students’ translation skills and attitude towards translation.
