Abstract

The present work was planned to study the biochemical effect of praziquantel on the blood and tissues of rats. Eighty (80) albino rats were taken from the experimental animal unit of the Faculty of Vet. Med. Zagazig Univ. and kept under hyagienic measurements. The samples of blood and tissues were collected 1,6,12 & 24 hours after administration of one dose and 24 hours after administration of 2,3 & 4 doses of praziquantel. Blood, serum and tissue samples were subjected to biochemical analysis for the following parameters:
1-Total proteins and albumin (serum).
2-Iron and TIBC (serum).
3-Hb (blood).
4-Glucose (blood).
5-G-6-P-DH (erythrocytes).
6-GSH (blood and liver).
7-Glycogen (liver and muscls).
The results obtained could be summarized as follows:
1- The serum total proteins and albumin showed a significant decrease in the mean values after 24 hours of administration of 2 therapeautic doses of praziquantel and a highly significant decrease after 3 and 4 doses of the drug.
2-The iron level showed a significant decrease one hour after one dose and 24 hours after 2 doses and a highly significant decrease 24 hours after 3 & 4 doses of praziquantel. Meanwhile, TIBC showed a significant increase one hour after one dose and 24 hours after 2 doses and a highly significant increase 24 hours after 3 & 4 doses.
3-The blood Hb showed a significant decrease in the mean values one hour after one dose and 24 hours after 2 closes and a highly significant decrease 24 hours after 3 & 4 doses of the drug.
4-Blood glucose revealed a significant decrease one hour after one dose and a highly significant decrease 24 hours after 2,3 and 4 doses of praziquantel.
5-The erythrocytic G-6-P-DH showed a significant increase in the mean values with 2 & 3 doses and a highly significant increase with 4 doses of the drug.
6-GSH level in both blood and liver showed a significant increase in the mean values with 2 & 3 doses and a highly significant increase with 4 doses of the drug.
7-The liver glycogen content revealed a significant increase 6 hours and a highly significant increase 12 & 24 hours after one dose and a highly significant increase 24 hours after 2,3 and 4 doses of the drug. Meanwhile, the muscle glycogen content revealed a significant increase in the mean values 24 hours after 2,3 & 4 doses of praziquantel. from the obtained results, it could be realized the effect of praziquantel on total proteins, albumin, iron, TIBC, Hb, glucose, G-6-P-DH, blood and liver GSH, liver and muscle glycogen. So, it must be recommended that, this drug should not be taken except under restrict medical supervision, for a single dose in combination with diet rich in proteins, carbohydrates and iron.
