Abstract

The sky-goddess Nut has been shown as the divine personification of the image of the sky in ancient Egypt on which the movements of all celestial bodies are seen, especially that of the sun and the stars. The observation of the movement of the sun and the stars on the body of Nut confirmed the understanding of the concept of the hour by the ancient Egyptian.The close observation of the movement of the sun with a precise knowledge of a horizon system led to modify the calendar with the addition of five epagomenal days, which were imagined as the children of Nut and these epagomenal days were attached to the end of the year to round out the 365 day.All of these features substantiated through the texts in the Book of Coming Forth by Day and lead to conclude that the sky-goddess Nut strongly reflects the ancient Egyptian image of the celestial sphere.992.2. The Daily Cycle The ancient Egyptian had along years of accumulated observation of the stars. It was observed that the stars when they rotate in the celestial sphere, they appear to be moving at random. The ancient Egyptians are the first recorded civilization, which refer to this random movement of the stars across the night sky1 There are also two groups of stars that are common in the ancient Egyptian texts. The first refers to the Unwearying Stars, which imagined as protectors of the Orion2. The second is the Imperishable Stars that refer to the visible stars in the north of the sky that never set below the celestial horizon3. Each of these groups has a twenty four hour cycle (daily cycle).These groups of stars and their movement were used as image for the cycle that could be observed during the twelve hours of the night4.
