Abstract

Curriculum designers should keep in mind that interaction is an important way of learning. Therefore, increased oral emphasis should be included in our teaching to give the students as much speaking time as possible.
Classroom interaction is necessary and useful as an educational strategy to enhance the EFL speaking skill.
YLs should get as many speaking opportunities as possible and their speaking time should steadily rise so as to prepare them for various communicative situations keeping in mind their suitable learning style.
The great positive effect that Multimedia has in education makes it a must to apply it in language learning especially to enhance the speaking skill.
It is important also to be aware of the digital world students live in when designing learning experiences to cultivate basic communication skills. Thus digital tools can be used effectively in developing EFL communication situations.
Based on the results of this study and the discussion of these results as well as the researcher teaching experience from applying the study on the primary pupils and from the results of the Pre-test, the researcher felt that there is a need for a new designed program aiming at developing the pupils’ EFL speaking skills. This program based on the effectiveness of multimedia in education and the great positive effect it has as shown from the previous studies.
Therefore, this study aimed at investigating the Effectiveness of Teaching Digital Stories on Improving EFL Primary Pupils’ Speaking Skill. The researcher depended in her study on applying eleven digital stories downloaded from the British council website, the digital stories were included in a complete project program which was designed by the researcher including the objectives, activities, timing and assessment of each digital story.
This study conducted in the second semester of the academic year 2010-2011, in a governmental school, on one class of grade primary five. The difficulties encountered the researcher during the application of this study was discussed in the previous chapter, and the results of the Post-test revealed an observed enhancement in the speaking skills of the sample study.
2. QUESTIONS AND PROCEDURES OF THE STUDY
The following procedures and questions were followed
1-Research question 1 aimed at investigating the required speaking skills of the Egyptian EFL primary pupils, and for this purpose the researcher reviewed the Egyptian EFL content standards NAQAAE, (2009) and prepared a list of EFL speaking skills which is relevant to the primary stage pupils. This checklist was submitted to a group of experts in order to state its validation and they state that it is valid.
2-Research question 2 aimed at determining the current status of Egyptian EFL fifth grade primary pupils speaking skills and for doing that, the researcher designed a Pre- EFL speaking test and applied it before the treatment, the results of this test was explained and discussed in the previous chapter.
3-Research question 3 aimed at investigating the effectiveness of the digital stories on developing the Egyptian EFL primary pupils’ speaking skills and for that, the researcher designed a Post- EFL speaking test and applied it after the treatment and resulted in an observed enhancement in the EFL primary pupils’ speaking skills.
4-Research question 4 aimed at investigating the primary pupils satisfaction with the digital stories applied to them and the results shown that the largest percentage was for the pupils who were satisfied with the digital stories taught.
3. FINDINGS AND IMPLICATION OF THE STUDY
The qualitative analysis of the sample study Pre- Post test and their responses to the feedback questionnaire, also the qualitative analysis of the teacher reflection and other tools based on the literature review revealed a kind of development in the pupils’ EFL speaking skills, which means that, the use of digital stories was a very proper method of teaching for YLs.
The findings of this study go in line with the findings of Al-Sabagh (2009) study which proved the effectiveness of a suggested multimedia short stories program in developing the first year secondary school student’s speaking skill.
One of the important implications of the current study is that digital stories proved to be a very interesting tool of study for YLs, as it provided a funny atmosphere. Pupils were very enthusiastic to learn by computers; they were concentrating all the time, the kind of cartoon stories was very interesting for them.
The curricula should be in keeping with the children’s capacities and potentialities and the forms of behavior dominant at any particular period of life. That, the goals of education should be in line with the goals of development.
The level of information and the means of learning must be in match with the children’s growth. That the education should be suited to the children’s development concerning their characteristics, behaviors, attitudes, habits, and skills they posses.
