Abstract

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a ubiquitous herpesvirus that is present in a latent form in the majority of the adult population. For healthy, immunocompetent individuals, both the acute, primary HCMV infection and the subsequent reactivation of virus replication are only rarely associated with serious clinical symptoms. However, in immunosuppressed patients, HCMV reactivation and reinfection are associated with high seroprevalence levels in the serum, and HCMV-DNA can also sometimes be detected in critically ill patients. The present study has been designed to evaluate the prevalence of HCMV-IgG, IgM antibodies and HCMV-DNA in sera of HCV-RNA positive patients and detect the influence of HCMV/ HCV co-infection on levels of ALT and AST enzymes.
