Abstract

Thirty eyes of thirty patients with primary pterygium were selected form patients attending the out-patient clinic of the ophthalmology department, Zagazig University. Cases with diseases affecting the corneal curvatures, refraction or topography were excluded from this study.
Pterygium was removed by bare sclera technique with intraoperative application of Mitomycin-C (0.02%) concentration for 3 minutes at site of excised pterygium.
All selected patients underwent complete ophthalmological examination including refraction, best corrected visual acuity, keratometery and corneal topography using computer videokeratography preoperatively and postoperatively.
Astigmatism was found to decrease from 3.22±2.43D, 3.20±2.46D and 2.88±1.67D preoperatively to 1.31±1.10D, 1.25±1.15D and 1.1±1.0 postoperatively when measured by the videokeratoscope, keratometer and autorefractometer respectively (P<0.05).
The spherical power of the cornea improved from 44.52±2.5D preoperatively to 45.87±2.4D postoperatively (P>0.05).
The best corrected visual acuity improved from 0.48±0.26 preoperatively to 0.64±0.25 postoperatively (P<0.01).
Improvement in the best corrected visual acuity was observed in 24% of the patients while 76% showed no change in their best corrected visual acuity
