Abstract Obesity is defined as an accumulation of excess body fat, to such an extent that health might be impaired. Dietarians use a body mass index (BMI) to define obesity. Men and women with a BMI of 25.0 - 29.9 kg/m2 are considered over weight, and those with a BMI of 30 Kg/m2 or greater are considered obese The present study has been carried out on two hundreds of human being cases for the evaluation of body mass index in Egypt, study of leptin and insulin correlations with BMI of all studied groups. In the normal group studied cases, BMI was ranged from 18.5 - 25.9 which is slightly increased than reference BMI of WHO for normal weight (18.5-24.9), in the over weight group studied cases, BMI was ranged from 26 - 31.9 which is higher compared to WHO overweight BMI (25.0-29.9) and the obese group also showed BMI higher than WHO obese BMI as it measure more than 35.8. The BMI study showed a highly significant difference between over weight male patients (27.05 ±1.46) compared to male control t = 7.78, p < 0.001, obese male (44.06±2.91) compared to male control t = 12.30, p < 0.001, over weight female (28.59±0.84) compared to female control t = 6.98, p < 0.002., obese female (46.15± 2.92) compared to control female t =13.90 p < 0.001. Obese male (44.06±2.91) and over weight male t = 13.5, p < 0.001, obese female (46.15 ± 2.92) and over weight female t = 16.21, p < 0.001., over weight female (28±0.84) and over weight male t = 3.31, p < 0.009. A significant difference was found between female control (21.56 ± 2.38) and male control t=2.02, p<0.059. Leptin level study showed a highly significant difference between obese female patients (4.17±1.94) and obese male t=5.14 p<0.001, Also there is a significant increase in control female (4.82±1.45) and control Summary____________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ 105 male t=5.14 p<0.001, control female (4.82±1.45) than obese female t=2.77 p<0.050, control male (1.84±0.34) and obese male t=.2.79 p<0.049 Insulin level study showed no significant difference between obese male (9.28±1.61) and control male t = 0.040, p < 0.79, obese female (9.06± 3.32) and control female t = 0.04 p < 0.096, female control (9.16±5.18) and male control t = 0.05, p < 0.95, obese male (9.11±1.82) and obese female t = 0.99, p < 0.34. There is a highly significant difference between obese female patients and obese male, a significant increase in control female and control male control female than obese female control and obese male control, a high significant difference in leptin level in obese male with polymorphism and without polymorphism and obese male patients with polymorphism than male control, a high significant difference between obese male with polymorphism and obese female with polymorphism and between obese male without polymorphism and female without polymorphism, a significant difference between obese female with or without polymorphism and obese female with polymorphism and female control and also a significant difference between obese male without polymorphism and control, While there is no significance between obese female without polymorphism and obese female control . The present study showed eight cases of obese patients three of them showing polymorphism of obesity gene at 183 bp and 38 bp while five cases without polymorphism at 221 bp using ladder 50 bp, nine cases of obese patients showing polymorphism of obesity gene at 183 bp and 38 bp using ladder 50 bp eleven negative cases 10 of them control and one obese case patient without polymorphism normal at 221 bp using ladder 50 bp. |
