Abstract

This investigation was carried out at the Experimental Nursery of the Department of Horticulture, Faculty of Agriculture, Benha University, Qaliubia, during the two successive seasons of 2007-2008 and 2008-2009. the aim of this work was to investigate the effect of some combined treatments between GA3 and Greenzit fertilizer on growth and chemical composition of Aspidistra elatior Blume and Aspidistra elatior Blume var. Variegata plants.
Each treatment was replicated 3 times, with 10 plants in each replicate. The plants received the following combined treatments:
1- 0.0ppm GA3 + 0.0 cm /L greenzit
2- 0.0ppm GA3 + 2.0 cm /L greenzit
3- 0.0ppm GA3 + 4.0 cm /L greenzit
4- 0.0ppm GA3 + 8.0 cm /L greenzit
5- 100ppm GA3 + 0.0 cm /L greenzit
6- 100ppm GA3 + 2.0 cm /L greenzit
7- 100ppm GA3 + 4.0 cm /L greenzit
8- - 0ppm GA3 + 8.0 cm /L greenzit
9- 200ppm GA3 + 0.0 cm /L greenzit
10- 200ppm GA3 + 2.0 cm /L greenzit
11 200ppm GA3 + 4.0 cm /L greenzit
12- 200ppm GA3 + 8.0 cm /L greenzit
13- 300ppm GA3 + 0.0 cm /L greenzit
14- 300ppm GA3 + 2.0 cm /L greenzit
15- 300ppm GA3 + 4.0 cm /L greenzit
16- 300ppm GA3 + 8.0 cm /L greenzit
The effect of the tested factors was evaluated through the following measurements: Vegetative and root growth and chemical composition of the leaves
The most important results can be summarjed as follows:
Part 1. Aspidistra elatior
a. Vegetative growth measurements:
1. It was found that the tallest plants was gained by using the combined treatment between GA3 at 300ppm and Greenzit fertilizer at 8 cm /l in both seasons.
2. All tested applications of GA3 and Greenzit fertilizer succeeded in increasing number of leaves/plant, especially the combined treatment between GA3 at 200ppm and Greenzit fertilizer at 8 cm /l in both seasons.
3. In general, all GA3 and Greenzit treatments progressively increased leaf blade length of Aspidistra plants, particularly the combined treatment between GA3 at 300ppm and Greenzit at 8 cm /l.
4. All treatments of GA3, Greenzit and their combinations significantly increased leaf blade width of plants in both seasons, especially the combined treatment between GA3 at 300ppm and Greenzit at 8 cm /l.
5. Leaf petiole length of Aspidistra plant in both seasons was obviously increased due to all GA3 and Greenzit treatments, especially the compined treatments between GA3 at 300ppm and Greenzit at 8 cm /l. Also, between the combined treatment between200ppm GA3 and4cm/l greenzit
6. All studied treatments of GA3 and Greenzit affected leaf petiole diameter of Aspidistra plants in both seasons, especially the medium level of Greenzit and its interaction with 100ppm in both seasons of this study.
7. The application of GA3at300ppm and Greenzit at high concentration was found to increase the leaf area of Aspidistra plants with highly significant differences in both seasons.
8. Fresh weight of leaf petiole was greatly increased by using all treatments of GA3 and Greenzit fertilizer as well as their combinations in both seasons, However the heaviest leaf petiole fresh weight was recorded by using the combined treatment between GA3 at 300ppm and Greenzit at 8 cm /l in both seasons.
9. All tested treatments of GA3 and Greenzit fertilizer increased dry weight of leaf petiole in both seasons, specially the combined treatment between GA3 at 300ppm and Greenzit at 8 cm /l in both seasons.
10. Generally, all treatments of GA3 or Greenzit and their combinations increased leaf blade fresh weight in both seasons, specially the combinations of the high and medium level of Greenzit. +300ppm GA3
11. All GA3 and Greenzit fertilizer treatments as well as their combinations succeeded in increasing the dry weight of leaf blade in both seasons, particularly the combinations of the medium and high levels of Greenzit+either300 or100ppm GA3.
b. Root growth measurements:
1. It was found that all tested treatments of GA3 and Greenzit as well as their combinations succeeded in increasing the fresh weight of roots/plants in both seasons, with superiority for using the combinations of the medium and high level of Greenzit.and GA3
2. Dry weight of roots/plants was greatly increased by using all studied treatments of GA3 or Greenzit and their combinations in both seasons, especially the combination of the medium and high levels of Greenzit+300ppm GA3.
3. All GA3 or Greenzit and their combinations succeeded in increasing the volume of roots/plant in both seasons, with superiority for the combinations of the high level of greenzit+300ppm GA3
c. Chemical composition measurements:
1. It was found that all applications of GA3 and Greenzit fertilizer as well as their combinations succeeded in increasing leaf nitrogen c (%) of plants in both seasons, with superiority for the combined treatment between GA3 at 200ppm and Greenzit at 8 cm /l in both seasons.
2. Leaf phosphorus (%) of plants was progressively increased by increasing the level of GA3 or Greenzit fertilizer as well as their interactions, However the greatest leaf phosphors (%) was gained by using the combined treatment between GA3 at 300ppm Greenzit at 8 cm /l in both seasons.
3. In general, all treatments of GA3 or Greenzit and their combinations increased the potassium% in the leaves of plants when compared with control in both seasons. However, the richest leaf potassium (%) of plants was scored by using the combined treatment between GA3 at 300ppm and Greenzit fertilizer at 8 cm /l in both seasons.
4. The application of GA3 and Greenzit fertilizer at various levels and their combinations was found to increase the leaf total chlorophylls content (mg/100gf.w) in both seasons. Anyhow, the highest value of leaf total chlorophylls content was recorded by using the doubled treatment between GA3 at 300ppm and Greenzit fertilizer at 8 cm /l in both seasons of this study.
