Abstract

The present work was conducted to study the effective role of the alginate extract of two species of brown algae (Colpomenia sinuosa and Cystoseira indica) against the harmful effects of sodium arsenite on testicular tissue in adult male Swiss albino mice. Male albino mice with weight 20-25 g were divided in to six groups
The obtained result can be summarized as follow:
Exposure to gamma radiation induced different changes in haematopoietic constituents of the experimental mice as:
1- Decrease in the percentage of change of the final body weight gain.
2- Decrease in testis weight.
3- Decrease in the primary spermatocytes count.
4- Decrease in the percentage of active seminiferous tubules.
5- Decrease in the epididymal sperm count.
6- Increase in sperm abnormalities.
7- Histopathological observations of testes revealed that sodium arsenite intake exerts various changes.
8- The histochemical observations of total protein and carbohydrate contents showed decreased amounts of both carbohydrate and protein.
9- Besides, ultrastructural observations of testicular tissue revealed severe changes.
10- Decrease in testicular antioxidants such as GSH content, SOD and CAT activities accompanied by elevation in MDA content.
The present study demonstrated also that, Administration of alginate extract appeared to reduce the harmful effects of sodium arsenite exposure in most tested parameters with its powerful natural antioxidant. Therefore, alginate extract may be useful as effective agent against sodium arsenite toxicity in male gonad of mice.
