Abstract

The third stage of labour is potentially the most dangerous part for the mother, and active management of the third stage is necessary. The main risk of the third stage of labour is the occurrence of postpartum haemorrhage. PPH is the most common cause of maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Primary postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) is defined as bleeding from the genital tract of 500 ml or more in the first 24 hours following delivery of the baby. Uterine atony is the most common cause of PPH.
There are many drugs which can be used in the prevention of atonic PPH as oxytocin, methergine and misoprostol. Oxytocin and carbetocin.
The aim of this study is to compare between intravenous injection of oxytocin and intravenous carbetocin in the prevention of the postpartum hemorrhage regard the efficacy and safety of each drug.
One hundred fourty women included in this study were divided into two groups.
The carbetocin group: included seventy cases received 100 mcg (1 injection) intravenously after delivery of the shoulder of the baby.
