Abstract demand for general infertility services showed rapid growth rate with a reported increase in the number of assisted reproduction procedures . In association with that increase, there has been an increased demand for female infertility imaging services. Over the past decade, the development of mul¬tidetector computed tomography technol¬ogy provides a capacity for exceptionally high spatial and temporal resolution. Virtual hysterosalpingography is a novel, non invasive modality that combines these capabilities of multidetector CT with the established technique of hysterosalpingography to allow a simultaneous non-invasive evaluation of the entire uterine wall, uterine cavity, cervix and fallopian tubes. The evaluation of the parauterine pelvic structures is a great advantage of the procedure that could be an alternative diagnostic technique in the infertility workup algorithm . Virtual hysterosalpingography with the recon¬struction of two-dimensional, three-dimensional, and virtual endoscopic views allows a compre¬hensive evaluation of the female reproductive system with a single imaging test, it gives well-appointed anatomic information and a detailed characterization of the different pathologic processes. The multide¬tector CT-VHSG test is simple, painless, and well toler¬ated, and it may be performed with a low-dose scanning technique. In future, this test may replace the current standard, hysterosalpingog¬raphy, as it provides a more precise information . In comparison with HSG and with US and MR imaging techniques that have been used for the diagnostic work-up of female in¬fertility, virtual hysterosalpingography provides more detailed information about abnormali¬ties of the cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes, and other pelvic structures, and it may allow a more accurate evaluation of tubal patency. However, the resultant exposure of the patient to ionizing radiation is a relative disadvantage that must be weighed against the clinical purpose. We conclude that 64-row VHSG may play a valuable role in the infertility diagnosis. |
