Abstract

Motorcycle accidents are one of the most common causes of morbidity and mortality nowadays. Increase in motorcycles production and decreased quality made the position worth.
Good dealing with motorcycle injured persons through ABCDE system can save many lives and prevent further complications.
Technological advances in medical equipments as new U/S, CT, MRI… etc changed our dealing with polytrauma patients and made it easy to diagnose problems and deal with it rapidly.
Risk factors of motorcycle accidents :
• Being male.
• Young aged.
• Motorcycle driver.
• On a high way.
• Don’t have a license.
• Not wearing a helmet or any other protective tool.
• Driving at afternoon peak hours.
Most common patterns of injury in motorcycle accidents in order are:
• Head or neurosurgical injuries .
• Orthopedic injuries .
• Maxillofacial injuries.
• Intra-abdominal injuries.
• Cardiothoracic injuries.
Note : Mixed injuries are found in big proportion of cases also.
Affected age groups in motorcycle accidents in order are:
• 20-29 years.
• 10-19 years.
• ≥ 40 years.
• 30-39 years.
• 0-9 years.
Common accident type in motorcycle accidents in order :
• Motorcycle to car.
• Motorcycle loss of control.
• Motorcycle to pedestrian.
• Motorcycle to another.
Affected road users in motorcycle accidents in order are:
• Motorcycle drivers.
• Motorcycle passengers & pedestrians are the same.
In motorcycle accidents near 40% of the patients had multiple systems injury, and also half the patients needed surgical intervention.
Despite of low number of deaths, the patients who had complicated out come in the form of permanent neurologic affection, orthopedic affection, disfigurement or organ resection were more than 40% and most of them were young aged.
Using protective measures as head helmets while riding amotorcycle and restrict traffic rules application for riders as well as pedestrians can prevent many injuries every day.
