Abstract

Thirty five rabbits in the age of 5 week month of both sexes were used in this work. These rabbits were divided into 7 equal groups, Six groups were infested orally with E.stiedae in a dose of 7000/2ml infective sporulated oocysts. The 7th group was used as a cont-rol. The oocysts of E.stiedae were ovoidal to ellipso-idal in shape. Their wall were smooth, & yellowish to orange in colour. The anterior end is narrower than the posterior one, flattened and contained an indestinct micropyle. The infected rabbits were slaughtered at different periods, on the 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 35th and 50th day post-infection.
Clinical symptoms included sluggish movement, reduction in weight gain, emaciation and ruffled fur. Ascitis could be seen in group 5, 6.
Two rabbits from group 6 died during the experi-
ment.
Macroscopically
The liver of infected rabbits were enlarged with the presence of small grayish white necrotic nodules of their hepatic tissue. The gall bladders were enlarged and distended with bile secretion. In group 5,6 the hepatic tissue mostly replaced by among the hepatic cells were stained red with Van Giesson.
The kidneys of the infected rabbits were cong-ested with the presence of hdemorrhages in renal cortex and medulla. The epithelial cells of the renal tubules showed different degenerative changes such as cloudy swelling, vacuolar degeneration and fatty change . Focal aggregation of lymphocytes between the renal tubules were observed. The intestines showed mild enteritis. The pancreas showed no changes.
