Abstract Burnout syndrome (BOS) has been universally identified as a profound social problem in all the well-developed countries. It is a major problem in the helping professions such as nursing, medicine, social work, law enforcement and education. Left undetected, and untreated, result in increased absenteeism rates, personnel turnover, management cost and decreased nurse morale and reducing the quality of patient care. This study aimed at assessing the prevalence of burnout syndrome among nurses working at Shebin El Kom hospitals. The study was conducted at Shebin Elkom teaching hospital and Meet Khalf psychiatric mental health hospital.The sample consisted of 140 nurses. Data were collected using Professional Burnout Questionnaire(PBQ) .The results of the study revealed that there is a statistically significant difference between emotional exhaustion and nursing qualification, age, marital status, and years of experience. Also the results revealed that level of burnout syndrome was higher among nurses working at general units, followed by those working at critical units and followed by those working at psychiatric units..Thus it was recommended that the concept of burnout and how to deal with it must be teached in the undergraduate curricula for the nursing students. Continuously motivating nursing personnel and try to adapt health care environment to fit them as far as possible. |
