Abstract

Burnout syndrome has been universally identified as a profound social problem in all the well-developed countries of the world. Burnout is a major problem in the helping professions such as nursing, medicine, social work, law enforcement and education. Nursing staff face working places with frequent emergency situations, inappropriate expectations from patients and their relatives, insufficient nursing staff and lack of authority in decision-making, all of which can cause job burnout for nurses. Left undetected, untreated, it can result in increased absenteeism rates, personnel turnover, management cost and decreased nurse morale and reducing the quality of patient care. The prevention of burnout is dependent on the extent of the use of coping strategies. Therefore, the health care organization must develop the necessary supportive measures to avoid the financial and social efforts in addition to the damaging physical and psychological impacts of burnout syndrome. The aim of the study was to:• Assess the prevalence of burnout syndrome among nurses working at Shebin El Kom hospitals.A descriptive study was conducted on 140 nurses working at Meet Khalf psychiatric mental health hospital and Shebin Elkom teaching hospital to achieve the aim of the study. The following tool was used to fulfill the aim of the study:
1- Professional Burnout Questionnaire (PBQ) used in the study consisted of two main parts:Part one includes socio-demographic data that contains both qualitative and quantitative variables, quantitative variables such as age and years of experience have been recoded into certain categories. Moreover, for some qualitative variables, categories are merged such as the department variable for which three categories are used (general units, critical units and psychiatric units).Part two includes the following questionnaire:A translated questionnaire, following Firth’s Questionnaire for Professional Burnout was developed. The modified Arabic instrument was given the name ’’ Professional Burnout Questionnaire (PBQ)”.This instrument is two-point scale (Yes/No) and like the original scale, it was based on the transactional model of Cherniss (1980), which emphasizes individual responses to stresses of work.As dependant variables, Firth’s Questionnaire was composed of:(c) A number of questionnaires and inventories to assess the various aspects of the burnout syndrome. This included Maslash Burnout Inventory which assesses personal accomplishment, emotional exhaustion and depersonalization toward patients.(d) The Beck Depression Inventory developed as a screening technique for depression in general practice, together with other questions devised to assess Oswin’s Concept of Professional Depression. The main results of the study showed that:73% were among age group between <25 to >58 years. • More than three quarters of the sample (76%) were married with children. • Two thirds of the sample were diploma nurses (69%) and only 17% were bachelor nurses. • The majority of the studied sample working at critical care units had depersonalization and emotional exhaustion, • The lowest frequencies were found among psychiatric nurses representing 20.2% for depersonalization, 20% for personal accomplishment, and 20.9% for emotional exhaustion • A statistically significant difference was found between emotional exhaustion and nursing qualification, age, marital status, and years of experience. • Level of burnout syndrome was higher among nurses working at general units (47.9%), followed by those working at critical units (31.1%) and followed by those working at psychiatric units (21%). It was recommended that the concept of burnout and how to deal with it must be teached in the undergraduate curricula for the nursing students. Continuously motivating nursing personnel and try to adapt health care environment to fit them as far as possible. Profound study is suggested to examine what kinds of health care environments are effective in mitigating burnout among staff in the specialty units.
