Abstract

BACKGROUND: Cerebral palsy (CP) is a disorder of posture , movement & tone due to a static brain injury acquired during brain growth in fetal life, infancy or early childhood. Aim: To identify and classify cases of CP in the locality according to the recent classification systems to help tailoring their management plans. METHODS: 1000 CP patients were recruited during the period between December, 2009 and December 2010 in Mansoura University Children’s Hospital (MUCH), Egypt .All patients were subjected to thorough history to identify risk factors, clinical examination to determine clinical types. Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) was used to evaluate functional capabilities. Evaluation of associated impairments especially epilepsy was done.
RESULTS: Out of 1000 patients with cerebral palsy, male:female ratio was (1.8 :1), Spastic CP was the commonest type (71.6%), while dyskinetic type 8.3% and atonic CP were the least type (9.8%)). Quadriplegic CP was the commonest topographical subtype (45.1%). Epilepsy was detected in 43.7% of patients. CONCLUSION: Spastic quadriplegic CP is the most prevailing type , most of these patients are non ambulatory GMFCS level4,5 and they have high incidence of epilepsy.
