Abstract

Sarcocystosis is an extremely common zoonotic infection even in the most developed countries of the world; this coccidian parasite causes muscular and intestinal sarcocystosis in immunocomptent patients. Sarcocystis infection cause frequently great losses in productivity of animals and occasionally may lead to death of animal .
The present study was done to make direct and indirect diagnosis of sarcocystosis in buffaloes, cattles and goats in Assiut slaughter houses by histopathological examination of esophagus, heart, diaphragm and tongue of the slaughtered animals; Moreover indirect examination also was done by using IFAT, The sera were collected from buffaloes, cattles and humans in order to determine the prevalence of Sarcocystis infection in Assiut.
Morphological study was made describing Sarcocystis spp. cysts collected from buffaloes. During this investigation, the visual examination revealed both large, and small sized macroscopic cysts from the collected esophageal muscle samples, it was revealed that the large sized cysts appeared as spindle or fusiform in shape and consisted of opaque bodies, milky white in color, those cysts ranged in size from 1.5-29 mm long x o.8-6 mm wide. On the other hand, small sized macroscopic cysts appeared grossly as white thread-like cysts running parallel to the longitudinal axis of the muscle fiber mainly appear immediately under the serosal sheet of the esophageal muscle of water buffaloes. They were 1-5 mm in length and 0.1-0.6 in width.
Histopathological examination revealed that the prevalence rate of infection was 84% in buffaloes, 80% in cattles and 90% in goats.
Using Immuno Fluorescent Antibody Test the prevalence of Sarcocystis infection in buffaloes was 91% and 80% in cattles.
One hundred serum samples were collected from humans suffering from non specific rheumatic manifestations, there was 14% of the examined sera were positive, while 86% were negative using indirect immunoflurescence antibody test.
