Abstract

A tractor (IMT) was used to evaluate the tractor steering .the first one used the mechanical steering system and the other one used the hydraulic steering system. The experiments were carried out in the Tractor and Machinery Testing Station at Alexandria, Agricultural Engineering Researches Institute, Agricultural Researches Center, El-Dokki – El-Giza, Egypt. A Microsoft Excel spreadsheet was used to make the calculations quickly for user. It is useful for user to change variables quickly and see what the effects are. Finally the equations given and explanation how to use to understand the whole process enough to calculate exactly what user need to know.
Factors Tested:
Some experiments were carried out in the laboratory and field to evaluate the mechanical steering system and the hydraulic steering system.
Field experiment factors for the tractor:
1- Three forward speeds for the tractor; 4, 5.5 and 7 km/h.
2- Four distance between the front wheel; 77.5, 94, 109.5 and 125.5 Cm.
The study included the following measurements:
1- The steering angles
2- Turning radius
3- The deviation of turning center (DTC)
4- Field efficiency
5- Turning time
6- The cylinder length
7- Fuel consumption.
8- Forward speed
9- Steering wheel angles
The important results which obtained as following:
The aim of the research was to know more about the hydraulic steering system and how to choice and design the hydraulic steering system for any tractor. A Microsoft Excel spreadsheet was used to make the calculations quickly for user. It is useful for user to change variables quickly and see what the effects are. At the hydraulic steering system the turning radius decreased with increased of the theoretical outer, steering wheel angle and inner front wheel steering angles. The cylinder length Increased when the inner and outer steering wheel angles increased. The deviation of turning center (DTC) Increased when the steering wheel angle increased and when the ratio of (l/b) increased .The Values of The field efficiency Increased at the hydraulic steering system and the fuel consumption decrease.
