Abstract

Adolescence is a unique stage of development that occurs between ages 11 and 20 years, when a shift in growth and learning occurs. They are in a period between childhood and adulthood. Adolescence is a time of moving from the immaturity of childhood into the maturity of adulthood. It is estimated that approximately four million adolescents have been victims of a serious physical assault, and nine million have witnessed serious violence during their lifetimes. A recent national study on community violence found that about 55% of urban adolescents have been exposed to some type of community violence during their lifetime. So, the study aims at reducing violence among adolescents at secondary schools. A quasi-experimental design was used on 100 subjects. 62 male students and 38 female students. In Taif region, Saudi Arabia. The following tools were used to fulfill the aim of the study:- Tool (1) scale for assessing violence:- - It was developed by Shokair (2005). It is 4 levels likert scale, composed of 48 items; and divided into 3 main categories. Answers were scored from 0 to 3. Tool (2): Scale for studying the condition of adolescents:- The questionnaire was developed by the researcher to assess students’ knowledge about adolescence period. It includes a- Personal information: - such as age, sex. b- Family factors: - such as order among sibling, relationship between parents, etc…….. c- School factors such as types of books preferred, character of teachers, and attention of adolescents and educational level of adolescents (5 questions). d- Physiological factors which include 5 questions such as sleep habits, psychosomatic disorders and previous exposure to accidents or chronic diseases etc….. e- Psychological factors: - it included 9 questions such as behavioral habits to get ride off it, behavioral habits to keep and psychological stress, etc…….. f- Social factors: - it included 3 questions such as degree of compliance with religious affaires, interest in others, and spare time activities.(B) Pre-post test knowledge questionnaire:- The responses of the adolescents were scored from zero to 2 scores to assess level of general knowledge. Score zero for wrong answer, 1 score for incomplete answer and 2 score for right answer. The total scores for general knowledge of the adolescents about adolescents information was determined by stratifying level of general knowledge of adolescents into two categories: poor knowledge from 0 to less than 16 scores, good knowledge from 16-32 scores. The behavioral changes of the adolescent were determined by stratifying level of behavioral changes of adolescents into two categories: positive behavioral changes from 0 to less than 22 scores, negative behavioral changes from 22- 44 scores. In addition to Socio-demographic data Includes personal information about age, sex, order among sibling. 2-Educational material about adolescence including information about definition of adolescence, stages, changes during adolescence (physical and psychological changes) most commonly violence (including information about violence and coping strategies used to control anger). The areas of content, which were identified to fulfill the learners’ needs, were divided into courses, after being reviewed by the supervisors. The main result of the study showed that: • 61 % of the studied adolescents aged 16 years and more with mean age (16.9±0.9 years). The majority of the studied samples were male (62%). • 56 % of the fathers were university educated and 36% have military jobs. 35% of mothers have secondary education and the majority of them 80% were house wife. • A statistically significant difference was found in some items of knowledge of the adolescents between pre and post intervention (P<0.05). • A highly statistically significant difference was found in all items of behavioral changes of the adolescents between pre and post intervention (P=0.000). • A highly statistically significant difference was found in general violence between pre and post intervention (P=0.000). The majority of the sample 58% has mild general violence post intervention while only 8% were mentioned mild general violence pre-intervention and only 2% of them have severe general violence post-intervention while 46% suffered from severe general violence pre-intervention. • A highly statistically significant difference was found in knowledge of the adolescents between pre and post intervention (P=0.000). • A highly statistically significant difference was found in behavioral changes of the adolescents between pre and post intervention (P=0.000). • Conclusion In conclusion, in the light of the present study findings, it can be concluded that more than half of the studied subjects had mild general violence post-intervention while nearly half of the studied subjects had moderate and severe general violence pre-intervention. Recommendation: - Parents, social worker and other adults to be positive role models and create environments that protect children from violence and teach them positive ways to resolve conflicts. - Integrating all efforts (governmental and non governmental) at national level to deal with youth and adolescents issues as one of the most important group of the population.
