Abstract

Nearly 10% of young women experience clinical eating disorders (Lewinsohn et al., 2000), and an even greater amount of women experience sub clinical eating disorders and risk factors association with eating disorders, such as body dissatisfaction. Eating disorders are associated with a number of negative physical and psychological consequences, increased risk of mortality, and are often severe and debilitating (Thompson and Stice 2001). This study was conducted to examine student’s awareness about eating disorders and its effect on body image and self esteem. To achieve this aim, sample of 105 from female students at Menofia University were chosen. Quasi-experimental design (one group pre test post test design) was used to achieve the aim of the study. To achieve the purpose of this study the following tools were used:- Eating disorders checklist: -this tool was developed by ( Garner , Omstead and Polivy,1983) This scale was translated and vaidated by Al-Adawi et al .,(2002). It is 3 level likert scale assessment instrument of 40 items. This instrument is comprised of two sections .section one (6 items), section two (34 items) Self- Esteem Inventory Scale: -This tool was developed by Coopersmith (1967) .This scale was translated and validated by Mosa and Dosoky , (2004). It evaluates attitudes of individuals toward themselves and it consists of 25 items. Body Image avoidance questionnaire - Arabic version of Rosen et al., (1991). This questionnaire was translated and validated by Dosoky (1994). This 18-item questionnaire assesses the extent to which situations or behaviors that could expose body image concerns are avoided Biophysiological measurement(Body mass index(BMI) calculates as weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters.An interviewing questionnaire A- Socio-demographic data sheet:- - Includes socio-demographic data of students such as age, birth order, income, income sufficiency, father occupation ,mother occupation, number of family members living at home…...Etc. B - Pre-post knowledge questionnaire:- -The questionnaire was developed by the researcher to determine students level of information about adolescence (3 items),nutritional needs(2 items),changes of adolescence(7 items), eating disorders (definition, etiology , types, signs and symptoms , tests) (17 items), effect and complications (2 items) and management and treatment (3 items). The main findings of the study revealed the following: * The majority had not working mothers (56.2%) ,and working fathers (96.2%). The highest frequency of them was the oldest one (40%). * The majority of those who had Borderline eating disorders were not had family problems (79.2%), eat together (83.3%) and maintain meals difference. * The majority of the studied students who perform physical activity increased after intervention. * The highest frequency was found among those who had varieties in their meals representing 85.7% and this percentage increased to 91.4% post intervention. *The lowest frequency was found among those who used medications and alternatives pre intervention (8.6%) and this percentage decreased to 2.9% post intervention .Statistically significant difference was found for all items( p< 0.05). * There was no statistically significant difference was found between eating disorders and knowledge, body image avoidance, self esteem and BMI pre intervention (p > 0.05) * There was a statistically significant relation between mother’s occupation and total eating disorders score pre intervention (p< 0.05) * A statistically significant difference was found between eating disorders and dieting and using medications and alternatives (p < 0.01
