Abstract Oral health in communities is changing due to changes in socio-economic conditions, dietary habits, and education. Oral diseases are considered a public health problem. This is due to their importance and their impact on individuals and the society in terms of pain, discomfort, social and functional limitation. Besides, in rural areas the predominant treatment option of decayed teeth in those communities is more often a surgical extraction procedure. Treatment of such a disease needs a lot of efforts and is not offered to many individuals. The Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) allows restorative treatments in locations with no electricity as it does not need the aid of sophisticated dental equipment. The ART approach involves the excavation of cavitated carious lesions with hand instruments, then restoring the cavity and sealing any associated fissures and pits with an adhesive restorative material Glass ionomer cements (GICs). |
