Abstract Congestive splenomegaly is common in patients with portal hypertension. Hypersplenism is defined as the association of one or more of anemia, leukopenia and thrombocytopenia usually with splenomegaly in the presence of a normal or hypercellular bone marrow and return of the reduced blood elements to normal after splenectomy. The usual treatment for hypersplenism is splenectomy (total splenectomy, partial splenectomy, or laparoscopic splenectomy) or partial splenic embolization (PSE). Splenic irradiation is claimed to be anoninvasive alternative treatment for hypersplenism and could be useful in patients who refuse other modalities of treatment. As splenectomy and splenic embolization for hypersplenism may cause a high morbidity and mortality and severe complications, radiofrequency ablation (RFA) has been developed as a minimally invasive technique for the treatment of hypersplenism. Our study included 30 patients with post-hepatitis C cirrhosis complicated with hypersplenism. We have treated 10 patients with RFA and 20 patients with PSE. |
