Abstract

Burnout continues to have a strong impact on our health care system. The future of health care around the world continues to be affected by burnout. It affects quality of life and work ability of health care workers thus affects quality of care provided, safety and satisfaction of patients. Study*- objectives: assess the prevalence and determinants of burnout syndrome among health care workers of Emergency Hospital Tanta University. Subjects and methods: the study was conducted on 523 physicians and nurses of different departments of Emergency Hospital for a period of six months. Results: Burnout was prevalent among the study subjects as most of study subjects (66.0%)experienced moderate burnout level and 24.9 % of them experienced high burnout. Considerably, 46.9% of subjects showed high emotional exhaustion, 97.7% showed highly reduced personal accomplishment and 14.4% showed high depersonalization. Age, frequency of exposure to work-related violence, years of experience, work burden, supervision and work activities were significant predictors of burnout. Conclusion:burnout syndrome is prevalent among health care workers and prevention strategies are essential.
