Abstract

This study was carried out on 85 male and female goats , their ages were ranged between one to three years old . The animals were classified into :-
First group ; which include 40 animals ( 28 diarrhoetic animals + 12 animal control ) , 18 animals were suffered from sever diarrhea and treated. by 3 - 5 gms of minced nutmeg orally according to the size of the animal twice daily for three successive days . 10 animals were suffered from sever diarrhea and treated by oxyteteracycline as antibiotic for 3 successive days . 12 animals were used as control group and treated by freshly minced nutmeg 3 - 5 gms three successive days .
Second group ; which include 22 animals . 14 animals were suffered. from tympany ( bloat ) and treated by drenching watery extract of 10 - 15 gms pepperment twice daily for seven successive days . 8 animals were acted as control group and treated by watery extract of pepperment twice daily for seven successive
days .
Third group ; which includes 23 animals . 14 animals were suffered from induced acidosis and treated by drenching watery
extract of caraway 10 - 15 gms according to the size of the animal , twice daily for 7 successive days in addition to fluid therapy of 250 ml Ringer’s lactate solution intera-venous and ruminal juice transplantation twice daily for 7 successive days also . 9 animals were acted as a control group which treated by watery extract of caraway 7 successive days with the same dose of acidoetic goats
The results of the first group which treated by oral administration of freshly minced nutmeg showed that , the diarrhea was stopped in most cases after the first dose of nutmeg . The alterations observed for RBCs. WBCs , Hb , PCV, total protein , albumin , globulin , AST, ALT , urea , creatinine , sodium , potassium , calcium , phosphorus and the physical characters and the pH of the ruminal juice were returned to normal on the day 7 post treatment , while volatile fatty acids not affected by the disease and consequently not by the treatment , in contrary the treatment by terramycine needed more time , expensive and caused troubles in
digestiOn .
Second group
The second group which suffered from tympany and treated. by oral administration of water extract of pepperment showed general improvement in the general health condition , whc:- the gases were released and the animals become normal after 7 days post treatment . Some of the bloated animals did not respond to the treatment quickly , the laboratory results showed a significant return of RBCs , WBCs, Hb, PCV, lymphocytes , total protein , albumin , globulin , AST, ALT, urea , creatinine , sodium and potassium ions to the normal values . While, the protozoal count and the’ total volatile fatty acids showed non-significant return to
their normal values .
Third group
The third group which suffered from acidosis showed slow improvement after treating the affected animals by oral administration of water extract of caraway , Ringer’s lactate solution I / v and ruminal juice transplantation . The laboratory results showed a significant improvement in the RBCs, WBCs , Hb, PCV , total protein , albumin , globulin , ALT , AST, urea , creatinine , potassium , calcium , inorganic phosphorus, and total volatile fatty acids . There were insignificant improvement to , consistency of the ruminal juice and total protozoal count ,
Conclusions
Finally it was noticed that goats which suffered from diarrhea and treated by oral administration of freshly minced nutmeg were recovered after giving the first dose of nutmeg , although the treatment was three days only . In addition , nutmeg improved the process of digestion . The results obtained
encourage us to use nutmeg in treating diarrhea in goats without any problems . The results showed of using peppermint in the treatment of tympany in goats revealed that this type of trearment is simple , safe , and improve the general health condition of the animal . The third group which suffered from acidosis and treated by oral administration solution of caraway showed slow improvement after seven days treatment, so further investigation must needed before using caraway in treating acidosis.
