Abstract

Medication administration requires specialized knowledge, judgment and nursing skill based on the principale of pharmacology. The study aimed to assess the impact of health educational intervention program for nurses about drug administration and utilization on their knowledge and practice. A quazi experimental design was used, and the study conducted at Suez Canal University Hospital at Ismalia City. The sample composed of 154 nurses who responsible about drug administration at different hospital departments. A questionnaire used to collect data about nurses personal characteristics and their knowledge about drug administration and utilization, and observation checklist was used to assess nurses practice throughout drug administration. Followed by developed health education program according to the detected need from the results of the tools. The results revealed that the majorities of the studied nurses had inadequate knowledge about drug administration and utilization and most of them had incorrect performance throughout drug administration before program and improved post intervention.
Conclusion: the nurses knowledge and performance were improved post implementation of health education program. The study recommended pre-and continuous in-service education program should implement to newly appointment nurses and old staff to up grad their knowledge and performance.
