Abstract

The effect of some agricultural practices (polyethylene soil mulch, herbicide and hand-hoenig) on growth, yield and its components in two tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) hybrids i.e (G.S and Fayrouz) during two successive early summer seasons i.e 2012 and 2013 was studied at the experimental Farm of El-Kawsar, Faculty of Agriculture, Sohag University, Sohag governorate. Tomato fruit quality (Ascorbic acid content and total soluble solids), chemical composition (N, P and K concentration) in tomato leaves and weed density and coverage were also studied.
Transplanting was in the 1st week of February. Black polyethylene (BPE) of 50 µm thickness was used as soil mulch applied prior to planting. Metribuzin (Vapcor 70%) herbicide was applied at 40 days after transplanting while, hand-hoeing was applied at 3, 6 and 9 weeks after transplanting. Un-weeded treatment was included as control.
