Abstract

The current study was designed to elucidate the effect of high energy fat diet contain either saturated or unsaturated fatty acid on lipid peroxidation, some antioxidant enzymes as well as some biochemical parameters in immature and mature male albino rats. For these purpose a total number of 150 male rats were used. The animals were divided according to the feeding regime into three main groups, 50 rats each. The first group fed a balanced formulated diet and served as control. The second group fed a diet rich in unsaturated fatty acid. The third group fed a diet rich in saturated fatty acid. Each group was subdivided into mature and immature subgroups. Blood and liver samples were collected from 5 rats in each group in first day and every 3 weeks till the end of experiment 12 weeks. The results showed extra-energy intake exhibit hepatotoxicity possibly by increasing free radical generation with altered activity of antioxidants enzymes, reduced GSH. The effect end up with deteriorated renal function as manifested by increased uric acid and creatinine levels. The observed alterations, however, did not affect the major cellular proteins in liver hepatocytes.
