Abstract This study was performed to assess the left atrial dimensions, volume and function in patients with chronic rheumatic mitral valve disease. Rheumatic heart disease is one of the most important morbidities affecting populations in the developing countries including our country and it affect particularly paients with younger ages. The current study was conducted on 70 patients presented to El Fayoum university echocardiography laboratory where , and. The study was performed from November 2012 to June 2013. The aim of the work is to examine and compare changes in left atrial dimensions in patients with chronic rheumatic mitral valve stenosis and regurge. The selected patients subdivided into three groups:- Group I: It includes 26 patients have isolated mitral regurge. Group II : It includes 22 patients have isolated mitral stenosis. Group III: It includes 22 patients have combination of mitral stenosis and regurge. Patients were subjected to full medical history and clinlcal examination. Twelve lead ECG was done to detect any abnormalities and to exclude patients with AF. Transthoracic echocardiogreaphy (TTE) was done to diagnose rheumatic mitral valve disease , assess LA dimensions ,volume and function and assessment of left ventricle contractility. The study showed that LA dimensions and volume were increased in all patient groups but the LA function is depressed in patients with rheumatic mitral stenosis. |
