This study aimed to : The present research introduces the Arab readers to the principles of modern literary criticism as adopted by the Urdu language critics. The three perspectives in the theory of poetry have been handled here, namely, the concept, the function and the instrument as adopted by the prominent Urdu critic Ibadat Yar Khan Ibadat Brelvi. Brelvi is one of the most well-established critics of literary studies and research in the Indian Peninsula. The research here also deals with the history of literary criticism, its onset in the Urdu literature, as well as the various international approaches of literary criticism, which all have great influence on the Urdu poetry.
In his objective literary criticism, Brelvi has adopted the two academic methods of interpretation and analysis. The former depends on explaining the ideas, the style and the elements in a literary work, a case which enables him to define the author’s message and objectives. The latter is based on fathoming a literary work to find the bases on which it is built and therefore also identify the author’s goal behind the work. He would thus attempt to answer the following questions:
•What are the authors’ ideas and attitudes?
•How do they handle them?
•What are the conditions that have affected them and their works?
•How successful are they in presenting their works?
