Abstract

The aim of this work was to compare the efficiency of different forms of zinc supplementation on acute diarrhea. This study was conducted on 40 patients with acute diarrhea and 20 healthy control. The patients were hospitalized in Pediatric department of Aga Hospital. This study included infants/children of both sex aged three to fifty three months, with more than three unformed stools in the prior 24 hours, and are able to accept oral fluids or feeds. The study included 3 groups:
Group (1): 20 infants/children with acute diarrhea and received zinc syrup.
Group (2): 20 infants/children presented with diarrhea received ORS with zinc ( Rehydro-zinc sachets).Group (3): 20 normal infants/children and not suffer from diarrhea. The samples will be collected before and after zinc supplementation in group1&2. And only one sample for healthy control. All patients were with some dehydration. The following results were obtained:A significant decrease in serum zinc level at admission and before zinc
supplementation in patients in both groups 1&2.- A significant increase in serum zinc level at discharge and after zinc supplementation in both groups 1&2 but still lower than control group(3) .- No significant difference regarding the effect of zinc syrup and Zinc+ORS on
serum zinc level in patients in both groups 1&2 as they are equally effective,
increasing the serum zinc level after supplementation.
- No significant difference regarding duration of hospital admission in patients
in both groups 1&2.
