Abstract

Breast cancer (BC) is the most frequently diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer death in female’s worldwide, accounting for 23% (1.38 million) of the total new cancer cases and 14% (458,400) of the total cancer deaths. Urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA) is involved in regulating BC invasion and metastasis, explained by its ability to facilitate ECM degradation, cell proliferation, angiogenesis, migration, and adhesion. Methods: This is a prospective study included 60 breast cancer female patients who are either non-metastatic (30 patients) or metastatic (30 patients) and 15 normal healthy females as control group. Pretreatment assessment of plasma urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA). Non metastatic breast cancer group patients will be followed for two years from the start of treatment. Metastatic breast cancer group will be followed till the progression of the disease. Results: No significant difference was detected between metastatic and non-metastatic group of patients as regards plasma uPA levels, while it showed highly significant difference between control group and non-metastatic group on one side and p-value is shown to be0.000 and between control group and metastatic group on the other side and P- value is shown to be 0.000. Association between uPA and other independent prognostic factors in non-metastatic group and in metastatic group showed no significant relation with any of studied prognostic factors except with the T size where abnormal uPA was mainly associated with T3 Stage in non-metastatic group. Conclusion: The most of previous studies measured uPA and other members of uPAs in tissue extract and not in plasma of BC patients as in the present study. The results revealed in the present study cannot be considered conclusive due to many factors like sample populations, other gene or marker expressed but not defined in the present study. Recommendation: Further studies including large number of patients and follow up for longer period are recommended to evaluate the benefit of this plasma marker more thoroughly.
