Abstract Three experiments were conducted during the period from July 2012 to April 2013 in the Laboratory Animals Unit of Animal Behaviour and Management: The first experiment was studying the effect of different types of bedding materials on the behaviour, performance and the welfare of Rats, .The second experiment was to investigate the effect of stocking density on behaviour, performance .and welfare of mice and, The third experiment was to verify the effect of Some stressors (Restraint . Oral Gavage) on the behaviour. performance and welfare of rats. It was found that wood based bedding materials (soft wood and coarse wood shavings) arc more preferable by the rats than paper shreds , corn cob and sand , this expressed in their behavioural activities, body weight. Mice housed in floor span: of 70 crrr’ and 50 cm2 were displayed their normal behaviour , less anxious ( in open field test) also gained more weight and the percentage of NIL ratio was low comparing with mice housed in floor space of 39 cm ’ and 32 cm” . Rats subjected to stressful management practices ( restraint and wet oral gavage) recorded more freezing. grooming, rearing, defecation and urination and more stretching, less distance travelled peripherally than rats subjected to hand restraint for ora! gavage also th is \NaS reflected on the animal by elevating the endocrine activity (cortisol level) and increase the percentage ofnenrrophil ’ lymphocyte ratio. |
