Abstract

This study was done to evaluate the effect of palateless denture on installed two implants in the canine area. Six patients were selected from Prosthodontic Department, Faculty of Dentistry Mansoura University were selected according to special criteria , all of them received two implants in canine area. After the period of osseointegration, the patients were divided into two groups. The first group received a palateless denture with posterior reinforcement bar and the second group received a conventional metallic maxillary complete denture. The design of both dentures was containing a recess with definite dimensions containing soft liner to act as a female housing of the ball supra-structure mounted to the implant. After denture insertion, the patients were recalled with the intervals of three, nine, twelve and eighteen months for clinical and radiographic evaluations of implants. The clinical evaluation was carried out by gingival, propping, bleeding index and probing depth measuring. For radiographic evaluation, the implants were evaluated by peri-apical x-ray film mounted on intraoral holder with parallel technique capturing method. The films were digitalized, magnified and measured by Corel Draw program. The data were collected and special statistical analysis were done. The implants with palateless denture (group II) showed higher in whole clinical evaluation parameters significantly with the conventional denture (group I)Also, there was no significance difference in the bone horizontally and vertically in both groups by x-ray evaluation. While, there was a significance difference in both among the reading of each group. So, it can be concluded that: 1- Palateless implant overdenture was considered treatment modality of choice for some patients suffering from the complete palatal coverage of the maxillary dentures. This treatment modality can be carried on two canine implants with special precaution in fixture and attachment usage. 2- The palateless implant overdenture retained by two implants needs more investigation to be considered sufficient as a treatment plan for edentulous maxilla.
