Abstract
Human oral cancer is the 6th largest group of malignancies worldwide. The majority of oral cancers are preceded by premalignant lesions.
For the transition of premalignancy into invasive carcinoma to occur, the remodeling of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and basement membrane is necessary and may be the first step of local invasion.
Several studies revealed the functional importance of EMMPRIN in tissue remodeling and consequently during tumor invasion. EMMPRIN is also found to have a role in tumor growth, angiogenesis and metastasis.
