Abstract Typhoid fever is endemic in egypt with quinolones as the emprical treatment of choice. There are limited data if any reporting quinolone resistance among egyptian Salmonella isolates.we wanted to isolate and identify Salmonella enterica serovar typhi from cases suffering typhoid fever at Minia governorate, determine quinolone resistance and test gyr Amutation as one of the possible mechanisms for quinolone resistance. Out of 230 stool samples positive for Widal test with a titer of anti-O equal to or greater than 1/160 40 (17.4%) of the isolates were Salmonella Typhi . 15% of the isolates was resistant toat least one of the quinolones. Sequencing of Gyr A revealed point mutations at position 83 and/or 87 of the gyrA gene only among resistant isolates. |
