Abstract
Practical Sufism of Abdel Qadir El-jazae’ri
And a Re-evaluation of his Civilization-al Project
This study investigates practical Sufism, in an attempt to stimulate the Sufi categories into practical practices, relating them to revivalist reformist currents through the example of Abdel Qadir El-jazae’ri who is considered the practical example of this idea. The study depends on the assumption that Sufism is part of the Islamic, Arabic identity in its journey towards existence as a cultural subject, and that the Sufis and their adherents represent a large sector of the Arab and Islamic society.
The dissertation is divided into two parts introduced by a preface. The preface exposes the sources of practical Sufism in the works of Abdel Qadir El-jazae’ri. Part one consists of two chapters, the first chapter deals with the concept of practical Sufism and its roots in Islamic Sufi tradition, and the concept of practical Sufism in the works of Abdel Qadir El-jazae’ri. Chapter two unveils the fundamentals of practical Sufism in the works of Al-amir Abdel Qadir El-jazae’ri; that is adherence to the instructions of the Qur’an and the sayings of the prophet Mohammad (PBUH), in an attempt to relating consideration to work, getting rid of the restraints of tradition, attempting to fulfill human perfection.
Part two consists of two chapters, chapter one embarks upon the category of the admirer connoisseur, in an attempt to reconstruct the ego through cognitive link between the tradition, intellect and common sense represented in the synthesis of practical Sufism.
Chapter two investigates the concept of the other from the perspective of practical Sufism in an attempt to re-read the relationship of the ego after constructing it cognitively with the other. The study, then, moved from the treatment of the theoretical categories to surveying the practices through the life of Al-amir Abdel Qadir El-jazae’ri.
