Abstract

The present study aimed to evaluate antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity of curcumin against biochemical changes and physiological damages induced by chloroform as byproduct of water chlorination in female albino rats.In the current study, 60 female albino rats weighing 120 ± 20 were used as experimental animals. Rats were divided into five groups (12 rats each) identified as follow:Group I: Rats were given the vehicle (corn oil) only at a dose volume of 2.0 ml/ kg B.W/ day by oral gavage for 90 successive days.Group II: Rats were intoxicated with chloroform that was given by gavage at dose of 150 mg/ kg BW/ day, dissolved in corn oil for 90 successive days.Group III: Rats were treated with curcumin extract that was given by gavage at dose of 50 mg / kg B.W/ day suspended in corn oil at dose volume of 5.0 ml/Kg BW/ day for 90 successive days.Group IV: Rats were treated with curcumin at dose of 50 mg/ kg B.W/day by gavage like group III for 30 successive days and then given chloroform at dose 150 mg/ kg BW/ day by gavage like group II for 60 successive days.Group V: Rats were intoxicated with chloroform at a dose of 150 mg/Kg B. W/ day by gavage like group II and given curcumin concurrently at dose of 50 mg/ kg BW/ day by gavage like group III for 90 success days.
