Abstract

This thesis presents the effect of Topical Application of Honey in Management of Radiation Induced Stomatitis. The radiotherapy induced stomatitis is one of the most common and annoying side effects that can occur to many head and neck cancer patients. Stomatitis may result in pain and discomfort, difficulty in eating which may lead to diminished nutritional status. It is a serious side effect, which can result in secondary infection (bacterial, viral or fungal); it can lead to delay in treatment schedule and sometimes even patient withdrawal from treatment. It is therefore, important to use appropriate preventative measures, and appropriate management measures when stomatitis does occur. Therefore, the aim of the study is to assess the effect of topical oral honey in the management of radiation induced stomatitis. A convenient sample of 60 adult patients who receives radiotherapy for the first time participated voluntarily in the study. A Quasi- Experimental research was utilized. Assessment sheets used by the researcher are: Sociodemographic data and medical information sheet; Oral assessment by World Health Organization (2005); Oral Toxicity Scale by World Health Organization (2005). Results revealed a significant difference was found in the scores of oral assessment tools between the two groups treated with honey and pharmacological agents. The honey group improved better and faster. Analysis of data and comparison of means revealed a statistically significant difference between the two studied groups as regarding the improvement of pain level in the honey group faster than the other group. The change in weight between the two studied groups was statistically significant, meaning that the improvement of body weight was much more in honey group than it was in the other group. The study recommended that Patients who suffers from stomatitis should be encouraged to frequent & regular mouth care and to apply honey for better management, Regular training programs to keep the oncology nurses updated with the most resent and effective oral hygiene practices, early detection of stomatitis and proper treatment to avoid or decrease oral infection as well as enforcing adequate nutrition rich in proteins, that promote healing and minimize infection
