Abstract

This study aims at investigating the images of women in the poetry of two different poets from two different cultures: the American poet Robert White Creeley (1926-2005) and the Syrian poet Nizar Qabbani (1923-1998).
The direct aim of the study is to psycho-analytically investigate the image of woman as reflected in the poetry of Qabbani and Creeley. Freud believes that the main doctrine of psychoanalysis is that the human creation is considered a sublimation of repressed sexual desires through the rechanneling of drives towards socially acceptable end. The methodology of psychoanalysis of literature aims at searching for the psychological motives of creation which are latent in the unconsciousness.
On the one hand, Creeley suffered from paranoia: He loved his father and thought that all females were persecuting him. On the other hand, Qabbani suffered from Oedipus complex: He loved his mother and hated his father’s behaviours. Each unconsciously reflected regressions to his repressed childhood desires and his attitude towards woman in his poetry.
This study aims at investigating the symptoms of the complex, tracing its development till it was resolved by making a love affair with woman in the life and poetry of each poet. Creeley reflected his adversarial attitude towards woman, depicting her as a stubborn strong-minded human being. In Qabbani’s case, He wanted to reflect his sympathy for woman as she was depicted as a submissive woman, revolting woman and suggesting woman. In all cases, he wanted to express his revolt against the Arab society that oppressed her, as he thought. The researcher attempted to discover the psychoanalytical motives of depicting these images.
This study is divided into an introduction, four chapters and a conclusion: Introduction, Chapter one: Psychoanalysis and Literature: a Pragmatic Approach, Chapter two: Creeley’s Persecution by and Hatred for Woman, Chapter three: Qabbani’s Sympathy and Love for Woman, Chapter four: Creeley and Qabbani: Attributes Reevaluated and Conclusion.
Chapter one presents a background to the thesis and its methodology.
Chapter two presents Creeley’s paranoia as reflected in his life and in the image of woman in his poetry.
Chapter three presents Qabbani’s Oedipus complex as reflected in his life and in the image of woman in his poetry.
Chapter four stresses the similarities and differences between Creeley’s paranoia and Qabbani’s Oedipus complex and the influence of the complex on the life and the poetry of each.
The conclusion sums up the main trends of the study. On the one hand, Creeley’s paranoia played the greatest part in depicting the image of woman in his poetry. On the other hand, Qabbani’s Oedipus complex played the greatest part in depicting the image of woman in his poetry. There is a meeting point among people whatever their cultures are that is the human soul. The formation of a neurosis would not change with the change of culture.
