Abstract

Thirty apparently healthy male New Zeeland rabbits were divided into 3 equal groups (n= 10) namely Levofloxacin group, gentamicin group and control group. Levofloxacin group was intubated with daily oral dose of 82 mg/kg B.Wt. of levofloxacin using insulin syringe after dissolving of the drug powder in water. Gentamicin group was injected with gentamicin at a dose level of 40 mg/kg B.Wt. by S/C route. The control group was left without any treatment. Half of the animals in each group were sacrificed after 1 week of the starting of the treatment and the remaining were sacrificed after 4 weeks from the beginning of the experiment.
Blood samples were obtained from jugular veins during slaughtering at the end of first and fourth weeks. A part of blood samples were collected in tubes containing dipotassium salt of EDTA as anticoagulant and were used for evaluation of hemogram. The other part was placed in plain centrifuge tubes, left to clot and centrifuged at 3000 r.p.m for 15 minutes for separation of serum. The clear serum was carefully separated for biochemical analysis. After each scarification, small pieces of kidney were quickly collected. Specimens were fixed in (10%) neutral buffered formalin. Urine samples were obtained using catheterization before each scarification and centrifuged at 1500 r.p.m. for 5 minutes for examination of urinary sediments.
Clinically, no mortalities were recorded at any group. Only all treated rabbits showed a significant weight loss in a time-dependant manner, fur loss, in addition to turbidity of the urine noticed after 1 week from treatment which was more obvious in levofloxacin group.
